The GH Team Keeps Growing With TWO More Talented Coaches

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

At GH we are committed to hiring the BEST college coaches who are ready to move past the traveling and win/loss focus of college coaching and instead help transform people’s lives in a one-on-one environment.  We recruit coaches with the job title “COACH REAL PEOPLE OFF THE FIELD” and we are thrilled to formally announce the addition of two very experienced and successful coaches to the team team.  Welcome Erin Ekeberg and Dan Zierfuss! Erin will be working in our Glenview facility, while Dan has joined Bucktown.

A Little about Erin:
Most recently, Assistant Head Coach at Northwestern University where she was also a rock star college player. Erin not only is a talented coach, she is a big mind and we are thrilled to have her talent on the team. Erin graduated cum laude from Northwestern and also cum laude from Georgetown Law. Fortunately for Northwestern and GH, Erin decided her passion was to help people in a one-on-one environment, went back to coaching after working in law, and is now dedicated to helping GH clients! You can read more about Erin on our website:

A Little More About Dan:

Dan has been a college coach for more than 6 years, ranging from Football to Track to Cross Country.  Most recently, he was Head Coach of Track and Cross Country at Knox College rising to the position of head coach after demonstrating his leadership and success as a talented leader.  Dan was a leader all the way back to his days at Beloit College where he had the rare honor of being the team captain for BOTH the Football and Track and Field teams.  We are thrilled to have Dan’s huge heart and strength (after all, he is a former Discus and Shotput Competitor) on our Bucktown team.  Read more about Dan here:

So Much Has Happened, We Forgot to Blog About It!

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

We’ve been so busy at GH growing our team (welcome Kelly and Tiffany), growing our relationships with the community, growing the GH Method, and watching some of our kids grow (the next generation of GH Coaches are starting to walk already)….that we forgot to blog about it!

So here we are back again in the blogging world. We’ve gotten out a lot recently into the real world by featuring GH coaches at events like Chicago Style’s night of Modern Beauty, the Chicago Triathlon where we shared a tent with the Triathlon training company TogetherWeTri, the Ol Phun 5K run in Glenview, and several more. We love getting out into the community and really helping people understand the power of the GH Method by doing the GH Challenge …. which is where people do one exercise with a GH Coach in an attempt to make “3 Lbs Heavier Than 6 lbs.” The response to this mini-coaching has been remarkable as we have found people really appreciate FEELING the difference between using their energy wisely. The more someone has worked out and especially if they have had a personal trainer, the more they GET THE FEELING of working out wisely. Thanks Kelly Lindsey, Nick Rubel, Tiffany Martin, Peter Hahaj, and Edyta Bujalska who have joined us at some of these events!

We continue to recruit NCAA college coaches into GH and have a few exciting new team members that we are looking forward to introducing to our clients later in 2011. Over the past two years, we have worked very hard to perfect the training and preparation coursework for new coaches who are joining GH and the program is intensive, effective, and helps our coaches really launch themselves into the GH journey so they can help lead GH clients through the journey themselves. Each and every one of our GH Coaches experiences the GH Method on themselves and uses that experience to help make them a better coach, a better person, and a better guide to others on their own path towards improved health and wellness with only two hours per week in the gym.

We continue to do so much more than most people expect from personal trainers in Chicago and around the country. We are passionate about changing lives one-by-one and look forward to continuing to tell the stories of our coaches, our clients, and our growth! As always, read more by going to http://www.ghfitness.com

Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Time Magazine recently ran a story with a headline that grabbed plenty of attention, “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin.” Shocking, ehh? Well, we here at GH personal trainers loved it and our clients have it over and over again. Most people think they can cardio their way to weight loss, but what happens after they do cardio is that indulge in some extra calories, and often empty calories at that. So focusing on physical exercise alone often leads people to frustratingly ADD WEIGHT instead of subtract it.

When your strategy for weight loss is just burning calories (which is cardio), then you have to have a laser like focus on what you are eating, how much you are eating, and you must eat less the day or week you slow down on your cardio. At GH, we are ALWAYS focused on food and nutrition, no matter what your goal is – weight loss, weight gain, improve health, get more energy – eating a better diet is a key for a happier everyday life.

We also focus on changing our clients bodies not through cardio but through strength training where we educate, educate and then educate some more how to use every ounce of energy to impact your muscle and your body. If you are looking for a personal trainer in Chicago, think hard about what your goal is and then ask them what is their strategy to help you get there. Use your own head, read Time Magazine, and do yourself a favour – don’t hire an entertainer but hire an expert!

Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Consult a Personal Trainer

Friday, August 20th, 2010

These days, we have been very hectic with our daily job while we usually lack time for our personal activities. We all need a break from all the strains from our day by day work. Sometimes, we just don’t know where to start when it comes to seeking fitness facilitation. Well, that’s the start when we have to do something for ourselves to be healthy and fit. This is just one of the major reasons why we should consult a personal trainer. Other than that, there are more plenty reasons that would actually convince you to start seeking for a personal trainer’s help now.

Northbrook personal trainers and Glenview personal trainers believe that there are more to life than getting ourselves mugged with our daily job life. These trainers believe that we should work on our body to get fit and naturally healthy. Since we all are not aging backwards, we have to keep a vigorous body as much as we can. And this can of course be possible with the help of personal trainers. Before saying no, you better start reading the following reasons to get you induced hiring your personal fit trainer.

1. Get Challenge
We can fool everyone, but not ourselves. We may confirm to everyone that we’re in shape and strong, but we can’t fool ourselves. As I mentioned above, we are not aging backwards, thus, we need someone’s help in this kind of case. We can consult GH Northbrook personal trainers to help us take challenges. These challenges shape not only our bodies but also our insistence.

2. Work Out at Home Alone
One of the benefits that we could get after finishing a session with Chicago personal trainers is that we can actually already work out by ourselves. That is, we may only need a little supervision from someone like GH Highland Park personal trainers, but for a less posh cost. By experiencing what it is to be trained, we can, on the other note, be familiar with how to train somebody else.

3. Physical and Behavioral Training
Working out requires dedication. Northbrook personal trainers don’t only train you physically but also behaviorally. They help you become dedicated in everything you do and decide for. They also teach you how to be patient. Since working out is a no pain, no gain activity, trainers like Highland Park personal trainers would teach you how to be patient.

4. Motivation
Facing in front of the mirror alone while working out is motivating, but knowing that someone else is looking after you whilst working out is more motivating. Better consult personal trainers for better results.

5. Physical Purposes
Take note that working out is not only for one to tone muscles and stuff. Personal trainers would help you to achieve the body requirements you need in order to qualify into sports events as well. Alternatively, you can also consult a personal trainer in order to help heal injuries that you had like arthritis, heart disease, and any other disease.

Northbrook Personal Trainer Customer Review

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

We usually write blog posts with suggestions about what to eat before and after a work-out, or with an explanation of a workout that many of our clients are experiencing, but today I have to share with everyone a thank you note we received that is our paycheck here at the GH School For Healthy Living!

I will remove the client name for privacy purposes, but here it is:

Dear Greg Hahaj and GH,

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for helping me be a better mom and a happier person.  After the birth of my first daughter two years ago, I was exhausted, 20 pounds heavier, and started to hate my body.  I was so stressed out and tired that I felt like I went from being 34 to 50 in one year!  After 6 months with my trainer Marcin, I not only got my body back but I feel like I got my life back!  Marcin taught me how to make better food decisions outside the gym, and how to really use my time well inside the gym.  I have more energy at work, I am happier at home, I set a better example for my daughter, and I don’t know who is happier – me or my husband!

I live in Northbrook, not far from your Glenview facility, but far enough that before I came to you I was looking around for a Northbrook personal trainer.  I tried several personal trainers in Northbrook and no one helped me like GH.  I thought all personal trainers were alike so I focused on finding a Northbrook personal trainer instead of finding the personal trainer who would help me change my habits and not just make me sweat.  I’d travel to the end of the city for GH and my trainer Marcin, and I just wanted to take a moment and make sure you know what an unbelievable experience it is has been.  I will say GH is the best Northbrook Personal Trainer. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done for me and I look forward to many more years of egg whites and healthy living.

Strengh Training to Reduce Pain? You Better Believe it!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

I have written before about the many benefits of regular strength training and a new study illustrates those perfectly. Many of our clients at GH came to us experiencing front knee pain. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is “a condition in which pain occurs at the front of the knee during or after exercise…women are more likely to be affected than men, and symptoms usually start during adolescence when participation in sporting activities is high,” ScienceDaily. Typical care for this syndrome involves avoiding activities that cause pain and to rest when pain is experienced. A study in the Netherlands compared two groups of people with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome for 12 months, one engaging in typical care of rest and avoidance, the other engaging in supervised exercise therapy. The recovery rates were better for the exercising group, with the authors of the study asserting that “supervised exercise therapy for patellofemoral pain syndrome in general practice is more effective than usual care for pain at rest, pain on activity, and function.”

Here at GH we have helped many people with knee pain regain confidence in their body and movement. Remaining active is achievable for almost anyone, with the proper modifications and progression. As a GH Trainer, I spend a great deal of time planning and customizing workouts to modify for various conditions, including knee pain. Chronic aches and pains can easily be used as excuses not to exercise, when they should be interpreted as signals to do exactly the opposite! Regular strength training can help to lessen aches and pains, regain strength, improve coordination, restore confidence, and boost self-esteem. The next time your knee hurts, think of the pain as your body’s way of telling you it needs a GH workout!

Less can be More in Strength Training (or how to be FITT)

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

A few weeks ago, one of my clients asked me if adding more weight is the best way to ensure that your strength training workout continues to deliver results. This is a great question! Have you ever finished a set of reps that felt difficult and thought to yourself, “Will I just have to keep adding more and more weight to make sure my body stays strong?”

The weight, or amount of resistance, used during a workout is only a small part of overall workout design. One of the best ways to think about fitness and prepare for the kinds of variety you will encounter in your training at the GH school is through the FITT principle. FITT is an acronym that stands for:

F: Frequency
I: Intensity
T: Time
T: Type

These four principles refer to the primary variables used in designing workouts that produce continued results. Frequency refers to how often a particular muscle is exercised, usually over the course of one week or one month. Intensity describes the overall difficulty level of the work performed. Time refers to the total length of time spend exercising, and type describes the wide range of lifting patterns or sequencing available in a workout. At GH, we manipulate these variables through the systems to ensure that your workouts remain challenging and effective, without resorting to a constant increase in resistance. This increases your overall fitness by addressing each aspect of human performance, which is why it is important you bring your “A-game” to each of your sessions.

Talk to your trainer about these variables and how they impact your cardio work outside of GH. Just like your workouts at GH, variety is key in maintaining results, focus, and having fun.
